California Sues Trump Over Ridiculous Wind Power Cancellations

August 29, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 24

California is suing the Trump administration over a deal that killed a major offshore wind project. In April, the U.S. Department of the Interior agreed to pay Golden State Wind $120 million in taxpayer money to give up a lease it had bought in 2022 to build a floating wind farm off California's Central Coast. The company also agreed to put money into fossil fuel projects instead. State Attorney General Rob Bonta filed suit in federal court in Northern California, arguing the deal broke federal law and should be thrown out.

The canceled project was a two-gigawatt floating wind farm, large enough that Golden State Wind had also planned to spend $30 million on job training, supply-chain work, and other community benefits in the state. California argues the cancellation costs the state jobs and investment, on top of the taxpayer money spent, and raises broader concerns about air quality and climate impact.

This doesn't change anything about home energy rebates or upgrade programs directly. It's a dispute over a large offshore power project, not a residential incentive. But it's a sign of the ongoing pullback in federal support for wind energy, which is part of the broader mix of clean electricity that can affect power prices and grid supply over time. Homeowners weighing upgrades like heat pumps or solar don't need to act on this news, but it's worth watching if you're tracking how federal energy policy shifts might ripple into utility rates or state-level programs down the road.
