BYD’s new ultra-luxe EV has coach doors and may be its first with solid-state batteries
This one is about a car, not a home upgrade, so it won't affect any rebate or weatherization plans. Chinese automaker BYD is building a new ultra-luxury electric sedan under its high-end Yangwang brand, spotted testing with a design close to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, including rear-hinged "coach" doors that open from the back. The car doesn't have a final name yet; BYD is calling it "HU" internally.
The bigger technology story is the battery. Reports suggest this sedan could be the first BYD vehicle to use solid-state batteries, a next-generation design that promises more range and faster charging than today's typical EV batteries. A BYD executive said the company is close to proving out this technology, with its first solid-state model expected in 2027. The company's battery unit plans limited production of these batteries in 2027, moving to full-scale manufacturing by 2030. The new sedan is also expected to support very fast "Flash Charging," potentially adding significant range in just minutes, and to use a powerful four-motor setup producing over 1,000 horsepower.
None of this is available to buy yet, and pricing hasn't been confirmed, though estimates put the car at roughly $300,000, aimed at ultra-luxury buyers rather than typical households. It's a preview of where EV battery technology is headed, but not something that changes any home energy or EV-charging decisions today.
