BYD tests new ultra-luxury EV with coach doors and a solid-state battery

September 29, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 1

This is car industry news and doesn't have much to do with home energy upgrades, but here's what's happening. BYD, the Chinese automaker, is testing a new ultra-luxury electric sedan under its high-end Yangwang brand. The car has a design similar to a Rolls-Royce Phantom, with rear-hinged "coach doors" that open the opposite way from typical car doors. Reports suggest it may be the first BYD vehicle to use solid-state batteries, a battery technology that promises more range and faster charging than the batteries in most EVs today.

BYD hasn't confirmed pricing, but reports estimate the car could cost more than 2 million yuan, or nearly $300,000. The company's battery division is aiming to produce these solid-state batteries in limited numbers starting in 2027, with full-scale production by 2030. BYD executives say the sedan will also support very fast "Flash Charging" and could use a four-motor setup producing over 1,000 horsepower. An official debut is expected in October.

For homeowners, this doesn't connect to home energy rebates or upgrades. It's a signal that solid-state battery technology, which could eventually show up in more affordable electric cars, is still years away from mainstream vehicles. It has no bearing on home electrification programs, heat pumps, or weatherization incentives.
