BYD reveals the updated Seagull EV will launch next week
This is a car story, not a home energy story, so it has little direct bearing on heating, cooling, or insulation upgrades at your house. Still, here is what is happening: BYD, the Chinese automaker, is launching an updated version of its Seagull electric hatchback on October 20 in China. The current Seagull sells there for around $10,000 and is one of the best-selling EVs in the world. Overseas, it is sold under different names, including the Dolphin Surf in Europe and the UK, starting around $25,000.
The new version will be larger, with a longer body and wheelbase, seating for five instead of four, a more powerful electric motor, and a switch to rear-wheel drive. It will use BYD's lithium iron phosphate batteries, a chemistry known for being cheaper and more durable than other EV batteries, with two range options. Higher-end trims will offer fast-charging technology that BYD says can take the battery from 10 percent to 70 percent charge in five minutes. Pricing has not been announced, though early rumors suggest a starting cost in China equivalent to roughly $12,500.
For now, this update is specific to the Chinese market. BYD is expected to eventually bring the larger version overseas under names like Dolphin Surf or Dolphin Mini, but no timeline or price for those markets has been given. If you are weighing an EV purchase alongside home upgrades like a heat pump or added insulation, this is one to watch rather than act on yet.
