Chinese automaker BYD is planning to build out a bigger footprint in Europe: three vehicle assembly plants and one battery factory. Production has already started at its first European plant in Hungary, and the company expects to decide on a second manufacturing site by the end of the year. Spain and France are among the preferred locations, and BYD is looking to buy and refurbish an existing factory rather than build new.
The move is largely a response to high EU tariffs on electric vehicles made in China, which push BYD to manufacture inside Europe if it wants to compete there. Europe is a huge market for new-car sales, but electric vehicles still don't make up the majority of sales in most countries, so BYD sees room to grow.
For homeowners, this doesn't change anything about home energy upgrades or rebates. It's a sign that more electric vehicle manufacturing and competition may be coming to Europe over the next few years, which could eventually affect EV prices and availability there. It has no direct bearing on U.S. weatherization programs, heat pump incentives, or other home efficiency rebates covered here. This is purely industry news about where a major EV maker plans to build factories.
