BYD is overhauling its cheapest EV, and it’s bigger than expected

September 28, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 1

This is car news, not home energy news, but here's what's happening. BYD, the Chinese automaker, is redesigning its cheapest electric car, the Seagull, which sells in China for about $10,000. Sold overseas under names like Dolphin Surf or Dolphin Mini, it's one of the best-selling EVs in the world. The new version, nicknamed "Great Seagull," will be notably larger and more powerful, with a longer body, a longer wheelbase, and a motor nearly double the output of the current model. It's expected to go on sale in China by the end of 2026.

The redesign also brings a bigger infotainment screen, a redesigned interior, and possibly faster-charging battery technology in higher-priced versions. Spy photos suggest it may include roof-mounted sensors for more advanced driver-assistance features. BYD has not confirmed U.S. or European availability, but if the car does arrive overseas as an updated Dolphin Surf, reports suggest it would cost more than the current European model, which starts around $26,500.

None of this changes anything about home energy upgrades, rebates, or efficiency programs. It's simply a look at how the entry-level EV market is shifting, which may matter to readers who are weighing an electric vehicle alongside home upgrades like a heat pump or added electrical capacity for EV charging, since a bigger, more powerful low-cost EV could eventually show up in more markets.
