Building Performance Association Approved to Sponsor Registered Apprenticeships for Energy Efficiency Careers Nationwide

January 20, 2026 · Building Performance Association (BPA) · Score: 66

The U.S. Department of Labor has approved national standards from the Building Performance Association (BPA) letting it sponsor registered apprenticeships for two energy-efficiency jobs across the country: Energy Specialist and Home Performance Laborer. A registered apprenticeship is a paid job that combines on-the-job training with classroom-style instruction, all following standards set by the Department of Labor. BPA will help employers set up these programs, connect workers with employers, and make sure the training meets federal requirements.

This is workforce news rather than something that changes your rebates or upgrade options directly. But it points to more trained workers entering the home-performance field. The Energy Specialist track requires apprentices to complete over 2,000 hours of on-the-job work and at least 144 hours of instruction covering building science, weatherization (sealing and insulating homes to cut energy waste), energy audits, and healthy-housing practices, with a path toward industry certifications from the Building Performance Institute and RESNET. The related Home Performance Laborer program overlaps with this training.

The approval builds on work BPA already did in Maryland, Virginia, Colorado, and Maine through a coalition called the ACE Network, which has helped register more than 1,000 apprentices so far. For homeowners, the practical upshot is a growing, better-trained pool of energy auditors and weatherization workers as demand for efficiency upgrades continues to rise, particularly in programs serving low-income households.
