B2U, LGES partner on battery repurposing for grid-scale applications
Two battery companies, B2U Storage Solutions and LG Energy Solution, are teaming up to give used electric vehicle batteries a second life. Instead of sending old EV batteries straight to recycling, the partners plan to repurpose them into large batteries that store power for the electric grid, known as battery energy storage systems, or BESS. The idea is that a battery no longer good enough for a car can still hold plenty of charge for stationary storage, stretching its useful life and lowering the cost of that stored power.
The companies say this could make grid-scale storage cheaper for utilities, energy storage developers, and big power users like data centers. This is not a residential program, and the news does not mention any homeowner rebates, incentives, or home battery products tied to this deal.
Still, it is worth watching if you have solar panels or are thinking about adding home battery backup. Cheaper grid-scale storage, built from repurposed EV batteries, can help stabilize the power grid and may eventually influence the price and availability of storage technology more broadly, including for homes. For now, this is a business partnership focused on utility-scale projects, not something that changes what is available to install at your house.
