Almost Dead Silence on Electric Vehicles from Automakers in USA

September 10, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 24

Traditional car makers in the US have gone mostly quiet on electric vehicles. For a few years, companies like Ford, GM, and others put out a steady stream of press releases touting their EV plans, even though electric cars made up a small share of what they actually sold. That marketing push has largely dried up. One view is that automakers leaned into EV hype to boost their stock prices, but investors never rewarded them the way they've rewarded Tesla, which still accounts for roughly half of all EV sales in the US. With EVs now a political target under the Trump administration, some automakers appear to have decided it's safer to stay silent or pull back rather than promote electric models.

Ford is a partial exception. It killed its F-150 Lightning electric pickup and canceled billions of dollars in EV investment, but it's now promoting a new "Universal EV" project. Beyond that, though, there's little EV news coming out of Detroit or other US automakers these days, especially compared to the near-daily EV announcements coming from Chinese manufacturers.

For homeowners, this doesn't change anything about home energy upgrades or rebates directly. But if you're weighing whether to add an EV and charger to your home energy plans, it's a reminder that new electric models and pricing from mainstream US brands may arrive more slowly than expected, even as EV technology keeps advancing elsewhere.
