Translucent Energy launches 1.2 GW solar module factory in South Carolina
A new solar panel factory is coming to Summerville, South Carolina. Translucent Energy is investing $15.6 million in the first phase of a plant that will make solar panels, with a total capacity of 1.2 gigawatts once running at full scale. The company expects to create 167 local jobs. Equipment is being tested now and should arrive in October, with the first panels shipping in December. In its first year, the factory aims to produce 600 to 800 megawatts worth of panels. For homeowners, the residential panels planned here are compact, higher-efficiency models rated at 450 to 470 watts, with efficiency up to about 23.5%. That's on the higher end for home solar systems, meaning fewer panels could cover the same amount of roof space compared to older, lower-efficiency models. The company says its supply chain is mostly U.S.-based, with some parts sourced from Turkey, which is meant to help solar projects qualify for a bonus under the Inflation Exchange Reduction Act (IRA) for using domestic content. That bonus can lower the cost of a solar installation for the entity that owns the project. The company also says this factory is the first step in a longer-term plan to build more solar components, including cells and wafers, in the U.S. rather than overseas.
Q&A Spotlight: What’s the best air-barrier for a beach house’s exposed floor?
A homeowner building on the South Carolina coast raised a tricky question about elevated beach houses: how do you air-seal and insulate a floor that has nothing but open air underneath it? Homes built on pilings near the ocean are raised up to avoid flood damage and rising sea levels, but that means the underside of the floor faces the same wind, heat, and humidity as an exterior wall — a much harder problem than a typical enclosed crawlspace. The homeowner, building in Charleston (climate zone 3A), already has a tight envelope planned, using taped structural sheathing on the walls and roof that's achieved very low air leakage (0.6 ACH50, a measure of how much air escapes a house under test pressure — lower is tighter) on past projects. The unsolved piece is the floor. His plan is to run a "smart" vapor-control membrane across the underside of the floor framing, seal it to the wall sheathing, and cover it with moisture-resistant drywall to form a garage ceiling, then fill the floor cavities with fiberglass insulation. He asked whether this makes a continuous air barrier and whether there's a better-tested way to handle that wall-to-floor transition. This is a niche construction detail mainly relevant to new coastal builds on piers, not a typical retrofit. But the underlying issue — that any exposed underside of a house needs the same careful air sealing and insulation attention as a wall or roof — is a reminder that floors over open space, garages, or vented crawlspaces are common places where homes lose energy if not sealed properly.
Duke’s New Energy Plan for Data Centers Requires Consumer Protections Now
Duke Energy has released a new long-range power plan for South Carolina that calls for two new gas plants and longer life for coal plants the utility already runs. Duke says the buildout is needed to serve data centers, pointing to 8,000 megawatts of demand from 43 large customers already in "advanced development" and another 6,000 megawatts of possible future demand, though none of those additional customers have signed contracts yet. Advocacy groups are pushing the commission to require data center operators to pay their own fair share of costs, rather than spreading them across residential and small business bills.
