On cooking performance, induction beats gas at almost everything gas owners care about: it boils faster, holds a lower simmer, keeps the surface cool, and wipes clean. On indoor air, there's no contest, because there's no combustion. Where gas still wins is open-flame cooking and cookware flexibility.
The real decision cost usually isn't the appliance. If you're coming from gas, your range location probably has no 240V outlet, and getting one there ranges from a cheap electrician visit to, in a minority of homes, a panel upgrade. The honest trade-offs: induction requires magnetic cookware (a fridge magnet on the pan bottom is the test), some pans hum at high power, and there's no flame for charring peppers or tossing a round-bottom wok. The panel-upgrade scenario is the one that scares people, so here's the base rate: roughly 15 to 20 percent of induction installations trigger one, typically in pre-1990 homes with under-100-amp service. Everyone else gets away with an outlet or a circuit run. If your panel is the blocker, it's worth pricing properly, because a 200-amp panel also unlocks the heat pump, water heater, and EV charger later. The combustion question
A gas stove burns fuel inside your kitchen. The EPA lists nitrogen dioxide, a respiratory irritant, among the combustion pollutants that unvented or poorly vented gas appliances release indoors. And a 2023 Stanford study (Kashtan et al., published in Environmental Science & Technology) measured benzene forming in gas stove flames and drifting into other rooms of the home.

A range hood that vents outdoors helps a lot; many kitchens have recirculating hoods or none at all. Induction and conventional electric stoves sidestep the issue entirely, because nothing burns.

The income tiers matter: households under 80% of area median income can have 100% of project cost covered up to those caps; 80 to 150% AMI gets 50%; above 150% AMI is generally not eligible. The catch is rollout. Each state runs its own program on its own timeline, and several haven't launched at all. Where the stove fits in electrification
If you're electrifying the whole house, the stove is usually the cheapest gas appliance to replace, and it's often the last small load keeping a gas meter alive. Once the furnace and water heater are electric, a gas range alone means paying the fixed monthly meter charge to run one appliance. Killing that last gas line is what finally zeroes the bill.
